Common questions
The questions I hear most in tax season
Where's my refund?
If you e-filed, wait about 24 hours, then check the IRS Where's My Refund? tool. A paper return takes about four weeks before the tool shows it. If the tool asks you to contact the IRS, or it has been longer than that, call the office and we'll look at it with you.
How do I pay what I owe?
You can pay the IRS directly from your bank account with IRS Direct Pay, or pay by card through a processor the IRS approves. Never pay by gift card, wire or crypto because someone on the phone asked.
When are the tax deadlines?
For most people, the individual return is due April 15. An extension moves filing to October 15, but it doesn't move payment. Partnership and S corporation returns are due March 15 for calendar-year businesses. The full list from now into 2028 is on the deadlines page.
Do I have to come to the office?
Not usually. Many planning meetings and returns happen by phone and secure upload. Some steps, like signing a power of attorney, need a signature that I'll walk you through.
How do I send my documents safely?
Don't email Social Security numbers, full account numbers or tax documents. Ask me for a secure upload link, or drop papers off at the office. The What to bring checklists show what to gather for your situation.
More answers are on each service page. For a checklist, see What to bring.
